ATLAS

With the long poem, Atlas, Glenn Bach documents his ongoing investigation of place, meaning, and memory.

Originating with Atlas Peripatetic in 2003, which used the urban sounds of Long Beach, California as inspiration, Atlas has expanded to encompass additional texts informed by significant places in Glenn’s life, such as Brooklyn, Milwaukee, and California’s central coast.

Incorporating a variety of creative techniques borrowed from the visual and sonic arts, including sampling, remix, and erasure, Atlas illuminates our emotional and mysterious relationships with the landscape in the face of environmental catastrophe. With Atlas, Glenn has consolidated his poetry practice into a single poem that continues to unfold in scope and complexity.

Atlas updates and links may be found here, as well as on Twitter (@AtlasCorpus) and BlueSky (@atlascorpus.bsky.social)

Currently at just under 1,400 pages, Atlas is organized into sequential chapters and sections ranging in length from 12 pages to four hundred. Glenn has been submitting individual excerpts to small magazines and journals since the poem’s origins in 2003. The first excerpt was published in DIAGRAM 4.1 in 2004. Since then, pieces from Atlas have appeared in over eighty national and international journals. The first manuscript excerpt, cricket (eclipse), won the 2024 Stone Corpse Press Micro-Chapbook Contest and is scheduled for a Summer 2024 release. A second micro-chap excerpt, verdugos, is forthcoming in the 2024 Summer Series from Ghost City Press.
